Ayako Fansubs in Sims 3

I got bored studying for my finals, and I've recently obtained Sims 3.

And seeing all the crazy things people are doing with Sims 3, I decided to have a bit of fun on my own.

What if Ayako Fansubs are made in Sims 3?

Do note that as I'm an old fag, the only people I will do are the ones I've worked with. Most of them old and retired staff.

Let's start off:

marsd:

I've met marsd once, and I don't think this is a good representation of him. But, what the heck. An insane, couch-potato, bookworm, computer whiz suits him perfectly.

His life dream: Gold Digger, where he wants to get married and kill off his evil spouse.

Sounds just like marsd.

Ch33ky:

Another member I've personally met. An Evil, excitable Schmoozer who is a workholic and has commitment issues suit him perfectly. I lost track of how many times his scripts were late because he was working night shift.

Tenshi:
The final member which I've met. An absent-minded, couch potato who is never nude and is also an evil computer whiz. Never nude because Tenshi NEVER watches porn.

Honest.

Cowteats:
The final member (and one of the last men standing) of the TL team, cowteats. Why female? Because I needed it to be female to make those huge boobs. A couch potato who is insane, good (he helped us heaps of times), and is also a hopeless romantic who is a computer whiz because of the amount of H-Games he plays.

The Edit team:

EvilLinkz:
An evil couch potato who is excitable and friendly, and also has a nice sense of humor, since he's like the only few guys now with a WB when I get into the channel.

HA! A workaholic couch potato who is ambitous (TAKE DOWN TEAM X) and who is, no doubt, a computer whiz.

Did I mention he's evil. I still won't forget the time he blackmailed me into doing Heroic Age.

Gains:

Sup matey? Insane couch potato who is both good and friendly. Computer Whiz added because I didn't know what else to add.

THE BOSS, Spi:

Expected anything less? Insane, hates the outdoors, is an evil genius who is also a heavy sleeper (Had to keep spamming him to get him to wake up, generally).

And that's the team!

But, what about the house they live in?

Main Channel:

As you can see, the main channel is just a room with heaps of chairs. Nothing much, because, IT IS NOTHING MUCH!

A fence surrounds the "all exclusive staff channel", because it makes people feel good and stuff.

Or whatever.

Staff channel itself:

The first floor of the Ayako house is the staff channel. Just a warm, cozy fire place with lots of chairs where everyone just sits on their ass. Chatting. Note the gate on the fence, which means that you CAN enter the staff channel, if you can.

Moving up, we have the Translator's room. 3 beds for 2 current translators because the 3rd is for the random translator who we whored in, but probably ran away after realising that TLing is too hard.

The 3rd floor is the Editor's/Timer's rooms.

Combined, because Sims won't let me build past 4 floors. Just beds, a desk with computers.

That's all fansubbers need. Really.

Spi's personal exclusive office/bedroom.

As boss, he gets access to a room with WINDOWS and is actually WELL LIGHTED. Also an actual bed with doors which require knocking before entering his private exclusive suite. It even features a bathroom for his private usage, and the pictures (not shown) and the statues signify his position in power.

HAHAHA.

But NF, what's that crap at the back? That, my dear friend, is the retirement home. Yes, Ayako is kind enough to have retirement homes for people who have successfully retired. Beds, windows and chairs are all there for you to sigh and talk to each other about "the good old times" where "fans don't make demands".

Rofl.

And yes, it is close to the house because some day, when your ass is suddenly needed because a translator killed a project, you'll be forced to work in those dark, lonely and wet corners in the house on a project thrusted into your face.

That's, the life of fansubbing.

Let's be honest here.

I don't have the time to do it any more. I'm really sorry, but level 3 uni subjects are just too annoying. I have the PoT raws with me, but meh. Time is killing me.

Besides, I'm an old subber now (and it's only 3 years). Time to move on and do something more constructive (like randomly rating a company's junk bonds into AAA grade ftw!!). The new generation will come in. Some 17 year old will have this sudden urge to start subbing.

Who knows.

How about asking someone else to do it instead? Hurr. If anyone is an editor out there who has an ass of a Translator hanging around, try asking. The TL might just like the show enough to start working on it.

Hmm, after a year of nearly crappy and disappointing animes, October finally delivers! I'm not going to go into detail of every show (go visit some anime blogs. Plenty around), but here are some of my recommendations.

SPOILERS

-Shugo Chara!:
If I had the time, this is THE project I'll be working on. Unfortunately, I am bogged down with all sorts of crap, and I don't think I can spend 6 hours a week translating again.

Story is about a girl who cannot express herself well, but instead of animes where the girl is shy and stuff, she does it in a way which everyone thinks it's cool. However, she really does want to change her character, and after some praying, she is given some spirit things which can change her character. Great stuff.

-Prism Arc:

I'm a sucker for action flicks. But unlike some shows with random girls just randomly bashing stuff, this one actually throws you right into the action while telling you the history. I'm interested to see how the storyline pans out, simply because I think this approach is rather rare.

- Shana Season 2

Unlike ZnT S2, this one actually has a plot. Go Shana!

-Minami-ke

Hmm, this is something like school rumble. 1 very silly girl among 2 (not one this time) rather clever sisters and a guy who likes the silly girl. This is NOT school rumble, but if you liked it, you should like Minami-ke.

-Myself ; Yourself

Another typical "Guy disappears for 5 years, returns, finds the girl he used to love but did not recognise her so she hates him now and now he needs to spend the rest of 13 episodes winning her back" type of show.

No idea why I'm so attracted to it though. Must be the VAs.

-Goshuushousama Ninomiya-kun

Ecchi with a pretty hot girl and a guy who likes her but is made to protect her.

Sounds familar? :)

But hey, it is funny, at least, the ecchi parts are.

-kimikiss pure rouge

Yet another harem type of show. But I really like the lead actress's VA, so I'm watching this one.

-CLANNAD

Umm.... Nakahara being in the wrong role (AGAIN) is another mark down for me. Then again, storyline looks interesting.

The next few shows depend on the next few episodes.

-Da Capo Season 2:

We all know anything with "Da Capo" should not go beyond 13 episodes. Episode 1 looks nice, but episode 2 may just slide downhill. Afterall, it is Da Capo.

-Bamboo Blade:

This one has a real possibility of being a decent watch. But I kinda found the storyline bland. I anticipate 13 episodes of kendo training and episode 14 of winning etc.

Yet I am attracted to Myself ; Yourself.

-Gundam 00

Blah blah blah. This is missing a Lacus. Seems like Gundam is going back to its roots or something. O_o

At least there's no more Kira.

-Dragonaut

This one is one of the few which really needs a few episodes before a decision can be made. To say whether this series would be a worthwhile watch with only one episode may not do it justice.

-Blue Drop

If you liked the above, you'll like Blue Drop. Both animes will need more time for themselves to develop. Give it a shot if you like the sci-fi stuff.

Not watching:

-ef ~A tale of memories~
-Sketchbook ~full color's~

You should watch Sketchbook if you liked Aria (The bloody cats are everywhere, even the cat from Aria). Otherwise, if you are an action junkie, skip them. Not saying they are bad, but they just aren't my type of animes.

Yet to watch:

-Night Wizard
-Jyushin Enbu
-Blue Drop

There you have it, the animes which I think would be a good watch. I am always on the lookout for "hidden gems" in shows. They are shows which no one has really heard of until you've watched the anime. Examples are Utawarerumono, Soukou no Strain and Doujin Work. Do also take my "recommendations" with a pinch of salt. I do enjoy watching romance and action, so you may have a different view as to what I enjoy watching. I'm just saying what would be a nice watch if you are wondering what to watch this season.

In case you didn't know, SaiMoe 2007 has been running for a bit (Admittedly, I failed because I didn't even know it).

In any case, Runa and Suzu both made it to Round 2 (where they shall be be completely and utterly be destroyed and stepped all over by Hinagiku...).

San-chan, Iinchou (class prez to you and me) and Maki are all in Group F, which is about one of the most interesting groups in this tournament. San will have a tough one against Shion, and assuming she goes through, it isn't going to be all smooth sailing with Tsukasa of Lucky Star waiting in the shadows to snipe assuming San gets through Souseiseki.

As for Maki and Linchou... Well, only 1 can go through. Oh well.

How to use IRC

Install.

Open mIRC.

Type in all the usual nicks and jazz when prompted.

Select Server (It's at the side, or click the flower thing).

We are based in Rizon.net, as is quite a few groups.

Our channel is #ayako, so type /j #ayako

Once you enter, type !releases to see the latest releases, followed by the usual prompts. (For example, ZnT Ep6 will be !znt06)

Some random stuff, like "ZnT 06 XDCC: /msg LazyTown XDCC send #26" or something will appear.

The Senate just sat and discussed the issue at hand, and has come to a conclusion.

Don't use BitTorrent if you are in Singapore.

Unfortunately, there is NOTHING we can do. I proposed private trackers and changing the file names, but after (a very short) discussion (with the distros), the team came to the conclusion that by using BitTorrent, you are revealing your IP address to anyone who torrents that file.

Let's face it. BitTorrent was made for legal downloading of huge files, such as ocremix.org's batch songs and o2jam's full song pack. :P

We do, however, offer a host of other downloading options, such as IRC and DDLs. Yes, they could be slower than your usual BitTorrent methods (strangely), but would you rather wait an hour and watch your anime, or pay $3000? I would presume most of you are in your late teens or early twenties. Can you afford to pay $3000?

Currently, because Seto no Hanayome is licensed by ODEX (ZnT S2 and HA are not, yet), we HIGHLY encourage all fans of Seto no Hanayome to download their source via IRC FROM the respective group's channels (Note that a compromised DCC bot can be your downfall too). The lack of literature on Fansubbing is disturbing.

So, I was bored one day (4chan banning me didn't help one bit, although the ban is now removed. Probably my ISP switching my IP around or something), and I decided to type "fansub" in google scholar, and see what the actual, "educated" community thinks about fansubbing.

And while I didn't expect much, I was sorely disappointed.

There were only 14 articles, and most of them talk about how fansubs infringe copyright laws and stuff. Another batch talks about how people can use animes, with the help of fansubs, to know the Japanese culture better.

Maybe that's the reason why so many people are saying "senpai" and using Japanese wrongly.

Alright, I give that it can give the Japanese culture, to a very very limited extent, some attention.

But, if animes such as Lucky Star, Gundam, Code Geass (CC's ass!) and Nanoha are an indication of Japanese culture, I think those who think so will be sorely disappointed if they ever move to Japan.

I find it amusing that probably the people who wrote the articles have probably never been in a fansub group before. There is one which states how a fansub group works (Cintas J.D. & Sanchez P.M., 2006), but they only state what a fansub product is, something all of us can see by spending minutes/hours to download an episode.

Which brings this question:

Have any of them know what fansubbing truly is?

Fansubbing is something that most people said is "enjoyable" and that they are "doing it for fun". While it is true that that can be possible (I do), some people treat it like a world/inter-galactic war. DDoSing, flaming (via IRC and their websites) etc, they have done it all.

This is why I am surprised why no one has wrote anything about fansubbing being something equivalent to a company. Let's face it, in fansubbing, if you want your epenis to be long, you need to get the most fans. Of course, if your benefit (Psychic income) comes from producing your own work, not caring if there's only 13 peers on that torrent, then you won't fall in this category. However, most fansubs either produce at the highest quality, at the fastest speed, or both (DB, Eclipse... Us? Haha. Nah...). This is to get the fans to come into their IRC so everyone can feel good or something. This can be seen in the enthusiasm some of the team members I've worked in when we've "beaten" team X to a release.

So, what is that?

Marketing

What fansubs have effectively done is to select a market concept to use, as well as the segment of the audience they wish to target.

Kotler et al. (2003), stated that there are 5 concepts which companies may conduct their marketing activities: Production, product, selling, marketing and societal marketing concept. Speedsubs obviously goes for the "Production concept", where the company focuses on improving production and distribution efficiency. "Quality subs" will go for the "Product concept", where the product has the most quality, performance and innovative features (Kotler et al., 2003). Some teams use the marketing concept, where they decide what the target wants first. In this case, it is "Can you please sub anime X", the team has a look at it, and decides to sub it if there is sufficient interest in anime X.

Another feature fansub groups have done is to segment their target audience. Who do they want to download their subs? Speedsubs will go for those who are "I just want to watch the damned thing". Quality subs will be all for the people who want "Perfection, with a karaoke and 0 grammar mistakes (because I want to burn it into my DVD to show my grandchildren etc)". Fansub groups must also decide if they want to go for quality at the sacrifice for time, and vice versa. They have to think where they are in the position of their consumer, the fans, relative to others.

As you can see, Your-Mom is perceived to be of low quality (XD), but I have done many attempts to move it upwards (But I guess I'll never succeed... Ayako has done pretty well under SpiegelEiXXL though). So, as you can see, fansubs do have to decide who their target audience is, and after evaluating the competition, if they do want to actually sub that anime, or leave it for someone else.

Fansubbing is also, a rather perfectly competitive market. It is a market which is rather impossible, if not impossible, to find in the real world. Yet, Fansubbing comes pretty close to it. Frank and Bernanke (2007),stated that four conditions are required for markets to be perfectly competitive:

-All firms sell the same standarized product.
That's not too hard. A fansub is a fansub is a fansub.

-The market has many buyers and sellers, each of which buys or sells only a small fraction of the total quantity exchanged.
Again, not too hard. For now, fansubs are still free. In this case, we shall assume everyone downloads every single anime.

-Productive resources are mobile.
Again, easy. You want to fansub? Get a translator, a timer, editor, typesetter, encoder. Or even better, learn to do it yourself!

-Buyers and sellers are well informed.
Everyone sees the same preview. Everyone watches the same episode 1 raw, unless you happen to be in Japan, then you watch it a little earlier than the cappers who will need to encode it and chuck it on Share/Winny.

Hence, fansubbing is a perfectly competitive market! In fact, it is right down to the paper, to the point that fansubbing has ZERO barriers to entry and exit, something which is very very impossible to happen in this world today.

Staying with economics, when there is cash on the table (Demand > supply), there will be people entering the market. This is the basis of vulture subs, (ie us, but I assure you that we don't do it for economic benefits, except for cz). A perfect monopoly can never occur in the fansubbing world because, simply, someone, sooner or later, will come in and become a substitute product, hence taking one's leechers away.

In conclusion, fansubbing itself is like a whole organisation by itself. I think it actually gives the 13 year olds (or around that age) a good chance to manage a group full of people who wants to increase their epenis and emos and whatever. Of course, you can't compare it to the real world, because in the real world, you can't hide behind your fake IRC nick, however, it cannot be denied that fansubbing is like a corporation itself. It is extremely disturbing that there is a lack of literature on this, given that this is much harder than trying to lead a guild in WoW or whatever other game there is. It would be nice for more research to be done in this area, and eventually, for more literature to be published. Yes, it is digital infringement, but, at the same time, it is an experience which is taking over the world.

As you all know, fansubbers do their thing for free (usually). They do it for the benefit for the fans and themselves rah rah rah.

But think of it, are fansubbers really doing this for the fans? Or more for enjoyment?

Let's say, you pick up and read a book, or even, spend the time to watch an episode. The opportunity cost of watching an anime is the next best thing that could be done, ie, study or work or whatever.

Same goes for fansubbing. Instead of translating, I could be studying, flipping burgers at Mcdonalds or entering some random fansubber IRC channel to flame them etc etc.

What do I get out of it?

Enjoyment. A benefit.

Psychic income is, let's face it, part of our everyday life. To spend a day watching an entire series takes time (At least 6 hours, I presume), and that time could be used to something better. Moving away from something as trivial as watching animes, psychic income is the value you put onto non-tangible things, like say, your living environment. Imagine that you are living in a pretty nice neighbourhood, and earning roughly $100k a year. A company calls and asks if you need to go the middle east for $150k a year. Normally, you would do it. However, because of, say, you prefer the surroundings you have right now, you place an additional, say, $100k, as your benefit. So, as strange as it sounds, you will say "No" to going to Dubai because the cost exceeds your benefits.

So, how is this related to fansubbing, pirating or pretty much any form of volunteer work which you spend time but receive no income whatsoever.

It is through these volunteering work that we receive some sort of benefit for it, or we won't be doing it at all. Whether it is helping the elderly, putting subs so everyone can watch it, or flexing your e-ween around so you can kick-ban people as and when you like and putting those "I AM IN CONTROL OF 3842384 MORTALS" type of stuff, this benefit is what drives us to do such work. If we have something better to do, or we THINK we have something better to do (on hind-sight, there ALWAYS is), we won't be doing these kind of charity.

My point?

Fansubbers earn psychic income. Thus, they get benefit for fansubbing. This is why, I realised, that they shouldn't take criticism too harshly. Yeah, criticism sucks, but if you step back and take it with a pinch of salt, you can either ignore it, or use it to improve. It's a bitter pill to swallow, but once you've learnt to swallow it, it is one of the best ways, that I've found, which will allow you to improve, and take that one step closer to perfection. Compare my SR eps 1 and 2 scripts with some of the scripts later. It is through all that "OMFG, NF, U SUX" that I've picked up some very valid points, learnt to check my work more, and improved.

Yeah yeah, real life yada yada. Flames. Yada yada.

Get over it.

And of course, all those "SLOW DESU" type of stuff, just ignore them, and the world spins fine. Fansubbing is fairly inelastic. Complain all they want, the supply is limited. In fact, we should start charging people for it, because according to the elasticity principle, when a good is inelastic, revenue is increased by increasing the price. >:D

And who says no one is doing that now? There are some "private" sites out there which offer 100mbit private servers if you pay $5 a month or something. Someone knows that such an opportunity is there, and will exploit it. Thankfully, the amount of free media has kept that nonsense at a low.

So, if something is too slow? DO IT YOURSELF (like us here ;)).

Now, if I can turn psychic income into REAL income. XD

And oh, the best thing of psychic income?

It can't be taxed.

Sometimes, I pick up a series I really like, but there are staff in the team which simply HATES shows I want to work on. (Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora is easily one. I wonder why no one likes that epic drama, but then, it might be just me. :<)

So, in order to pay back, I usually help my team members sub what THEY want using what I know, which is, translation.

And they are all very reasonable people. I mean, I can help them watch a series a little faster, so why can't I help out translating it? As I've said, I don't exactly enjoy Heroic Age (other than the fact that the script is a little over 2xx lines thanks to all those endless silence. Whee), but I'm working on it because 404 said he wants to watch it, and he has been nothing short of instrumental in every single one of the releases thus far.

So, we don't sub shows to "piss people off" or to "troll". If that's the case, we would be chucking out tons of animes (I think? Then again, time is an issue)

Hence, please do not misunderstand us. We're not here to troll. We are here to sub for our team's, and everyone's, enjoyment. Of course, if you still do not believe me, I have nothing else to say.
